Chamber Jazz Program
At Western, our Combo Program contains the jazz elite. We believe our students grow through active performance and quintets rotate into performing venues around the city of Macomb on two nights per week. Students perform original compositions and jazz standards from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday every week of the semester. These groups are in demand and also perform at other University functions throughout the academic year. In 2014, the Chamber program received Outstanding recognition for their all original program at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, all performers receiving Outstanding individual awards as soloists.
On February 14, 2020 the 17 member Kewanee High School Jazz Ensemble attended the 47th Annual Western Illinois University Jazz Festival. The day included a large group clinic with internationally acclaimed director Andy Baylock from the University of North Texas, small group clinics with the WIU Jazz faculty, and 30 minute performance blocks by area high school groups. The headlining performance was an hourlong set by the world-famous WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra. Kewanee High School class of 2019 alum Jack Watson plays first Tenor Sax for the JSO as a freshman Jazz Studies Major at WIU. The band was also treated to a performance by the WIU Jazz Combo featuring KHS class of 2018 alum Brett Dougherty on String Bass. Next up for the KHS Jazz Ensemble is the Bradley University Jazz Festival on Tuesday, February 25th.”
